Spring clean your makeup brushes for great looking skin

Regularly cleaning makeup brushes keeps skin healthy

Cleaning your makeup brushes keeps your skin healthy. Neglecting your brushes means we extend an open invitation to nasty bacteria and germs onto our skin which can result in clogged pores and pesky pimples.  Makeup brushes accumulate harsh chemicals, dirt and oil after every use so it’s always a must that you clean them regularly. Properly cleansing your brushes also prolongs their shape and preserves their quality, hence saving you some extra dollars to spend on new products.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to cleanse your brushes naturally without nasty chemicals by using only ingredients that can easily be found in your kitchen pantry or around the home.

Melt away makeup pigments with virgin coconut oil

Coconut oil is a natural conditioner and antiseptic. Cleaning makeup brushes with coconut oil will help soften and protect the bristles to boost longevity. At the same time, its natural antibacterial properties will get rid of the bad stuff lurking in your brushes.

Prepare a small bowl filled with water and 1 tbsp of coconut oil. Take your dirty brushes and swirl them in the mixture until the pigments wear off.  Let us know how you go in our comments below.

Disinfect makeup brushes in distilled white vinegar solution

Since we’re talking about spring cleaning here, we suggest double cleansing your brushes to thoroughly free it from bacteria. The beauty of using a natural disinfectant such as vinegar is that it doesn’t ruin the bristles of your makeup brush unlike alcohol.

In a small bowl filled with water, add 2 tbsp of distilled white vinegar and stir to mix. Soak your makeup brushes for around 30 seconds to let the vinegar do its wonders. After taking them out, let them sit (but not yet dry) for 5 minutes prior to washing.

Cleaning makeup brushes with unscented soap and conditioning with olive or lavender oil

The next step would be to finally wash the brushes to get rid of the remaining impurities, as well as the vinegary scent left by the disinfection.  Try using a pure unscented soap for this step.  Anything that alcohol, fragrances SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) maybe harsh and damaging to your brushes. We prefer a simple castile soap that is made with olive oil.

As you bring your brushes into a lather using soap, you can also swirl them in a bowl with a few drops of essential oil for conditioning. You may use olive oil for this one, but if you’d like to give your brushes a naturally soothing scent, use lavender oil instead. Using these oils will help soften your makeup brushes to ensure that they go smoothly onto your skin.

Air dry your brushes

It can be quite frustrating to wait for all of them to dry. Because of this, some use blow dryers to speed up the drying process. Do not commit the same mistake! The heat coming from the blow dryer will not only mess up with the shape of your brushes but will also loosen the glue that holds the bristles together. The right way is to just lay them on a clean towel and wait for them to air dry.
