Hair masks? Is this even a thing? Well why not?
Our crowning glory deserves a pampering every now and then. After all, it’s exposed to the harsh element every day which doesn’t help with frizz and damage. It’s nice to give our hair the occasional treat with a trip to the salon for a deep condition treatment but why do that when you can give your hair the intensive care it needs in the comfort of your own home? Check out some of our favourite all natural hair masks that comes straight out of your kitchen!
Yogurt and Coconut Oil for Damaged Hair
Dry damaged hair is a common problem for many of us, especially with the increase use of chemical based dyes and heat styling tools. To help restore some of the shine to your hair, why not try a natural hair mask using yogurt and coconut oil mixture. Yoghurt is rich probiotics and protein. Not only is is super tasty to eat but it can provide a super nourishing treatment to help hair strands to repair. Coconut oil which has exceptional antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties will also help with strengthening the moisture barrier of the hair to protect it from further damage.
If you have medium length hair, a cup of yogurt and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil is enough to cover your hair and scalp. If you’d like to make it more soothing, you can use chilled yogurt.
For all our hair masks recipes, we recommend leaving for at least 30 minutes to get the best results. You may want to wrap your hair with some cling film to keep the moisture in your hair and not all over yourself. Then wash as usual.
Honey and Olive Oil for Dry Hair and Dandruff
Indulge your hair with this hydrating honey + olive oil hair mask. Not only does this relieve dry hair, but also helps nourish and hydrate dry scalp to eliminate dandruff. To achieve optimum results, it’s ideal to use extra virgin olive oil and unrefined honey for this mixture to ensure that you get the purest of its nutrients.
For this hair mask, you need to mix the two in a 1:1 ratio and massage the hair mask thoroughly to your hair and scalp.
Avocado and Lemon for Oily Hair
Avocado is a rich source of amino acids and protein that help soften the hair and soothe the scalp. This partners well with lemon to help rejuvenate the scalp and treat oily hair. With this hair mask mixture, you can help minimize your scalp’s excessive sebum production as lemon helps tighten the hair follicles. On the other hand, avocado also helps normalize the moisture levels of the hair and scalp so that they’ll be at their healthiest state.
To make this, mash the avocado really well until turns into a paste. Then squeeze one lemon to take its juice out and mix it with the avocado paste.
Coconut Milk and Cinnamon for Hair Growth
Many of us are already familiar with the awesome benefits of coconut for our hair. While coconut oil is a more common hair treatment in many DIYs, coconut milk works wonders especially for hair growth and conditioning. It’s quite lighter compared to oil so it’s much easier to work with powder-based ingredients like cinnamon. Cinnamon is also an amazing hair growth stimulant. It has natural antibacterial properties that clear the hair follicles of dirt, excess oil and bacteria to promote hair growth.
Use half a cup of the coconut milk and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for this hair mask. You may adjust the portions according to your hair length, but make sure you don’t add too much cinnamon powder as it can be a bit stingy or drying on the scalp.
The key to working with hair masks is to work to the proper ratio of the ingredients. Depending on hair length, ideally a cup of mashed fruit would require about one tablespoon of the oil or liquid ingredients. And remember to leave the hair mask in for at least 30 mins before washing so that the nutrients are well-absorbed by the hair and scalp.
I hope you enjoyed this DIY. If you have a favourite all natural hair mask that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you.
