You might have heard about oil cleansing in your quest to find a simple, natural and effective skincare routine. But is it good for you? Well good news, you’ve struck gold!
The oil cleansing method (OCM) is a chemical free way of removing dirt from your pores, protecting your skin from bacteria and keeping your face glowing without the need for complicated routines!
Why is oil cleansing better than other facial cleansers?
It’s suitable for all skin types from dry, sensitive and flaky to normal/combination and even oily, acne-prone skin! Whilst it might not seem like a great idea to add oil to already oily skin, in fact it’s a perfect mix.
Often by using other products that claim to be suitable for oily skin, you might actually be making things worse without realising it.
These products will often dry out your natural oils to the point that your skin starts to produce MORE oil to combat how irritated and unhappy it has become. Spots reappear and the cycle never ends…
Oils go together like avocadoes and toast.
Here’s how it works.
When you add cleansing oils to your face, they cling to your natural skin oils. Using the right types of cleansing oils, such as coconut oil and jojoba oil, will help to get rid of that excess build-up of sebum (the oily stuff that clogs your pores) without drying out the skin.
The most effective cleansing oils and cleansing oil gels get deep into your pores and dissolve all that nasty stuff that shouldn’t be there. In fact, some oils are actually anti-fungal meaning they help to fight acne-causing bacteria to protect your skin.
Are there any other benefits?
As well as being a fuss free, chemical free way of cleaning the skin, the OCM is also:
gentle and hypoallergenic, making it great for sensitive skin
moisturising and hydrating
inflammation reducing, soothing the skin
oil regulating, keeping the skin in check.
Great! How do I use it?
Using a cleansing oil is a really simple process, perfect if you have a busy schedule with work or school.
Try this simple oil mix to keep those pesky pimples away:
2 teaspoons castor oil
8 teaspoons sunflower oil
Mix and store in a container. This will last you a couple of weeks.
If you have oily skin, increase the castor oil by another teaspoon. Reduce the castor oil if you have dry skin.
If you are abit more adventurous try replacing part of the sunflower oil with avocado oil or grapeseed oils until you find something that is perfect for your skin.
Step 1: apply & massage
Apply about ½ teaspoon to dry skin and massage in for around a minute. This gives the oils a chance to attach to the sebum stored in the pores ready to cause breakouts you’d rather not have.
Make sure you massage all over your face, particularly in areas you are more prone to pimples – whether than be around the nose, mouth, forehead or anywhere else.
Step 2: remove the oil
Dampen a face washcloth with warm water and lay this over your face for around 30 seconds to open up your pores. Gently wipe away the dirt and oil from our face.
This step makes sure all the gunk is removed from your skin.
TIP: Try using a microfibre cloth to wipe away the oil. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to remove the oil from your face with just warm water!
Step 3: rinse and dry
Splash warm water on your face to remove any excess cleansing oil. Pat dry with a clean towel.
This simple routine will help remove all the dirt and grime that builds up during the day and night, leaving your skin looking radiant and super clean.
