How to look after teenage skin 101

Caring for teenage skin can be so overwhelming these days. You may have heard that some people follow multi-step skincare regimes involving all kinds of products that you don’t understand. In fact it can be so confusing that it sometimes seems easier to ignore it altogether.

Well, that’s probably not the best idea…

The world around us is full of chemicals and pollutants that constantly bombard our skin every day.  That’s why it’s important to look after young   skin from an early age to keep it looking fresh and healthy. If you suffer from breakouts, blemishes and oily skin, then you definitely want to address this with a solid skincare routine.   It’s never too late to start looking after your skin, especially teenage skin!

Okay, so what steps should I take?

Cleanse and moisturise.  This is super important especially for teenage skin.  Proper cleansing will remove the oil and bacteria from your skin which may cause further inflammation.

Toner is an optional extra as some people swear by it and others aren’t as convinced.

If you want something super simple, then at the very least use a cleansing oil. This works as the cleanse step, but the oils in the product also have moisturising properties.

What kinds of products should I use?

Make sure to choose natural products that are free from chemicals. This ensures that the ingredients are safe for the skin and won’t cause any nasty side effects.

Cleanser

This initial step is all about clearing away dirt build up. A good cleanser should get deep into your pores and get rid of the bacteria that causes blackheads and acne.  Be careful not to use too harsh a cleaner.  Stripping away too much oil from your skin will only cause more oil to be produced. Not great for teenage skin!

Toner

Toner are said to rebalance the skin’s ph (chemicals) after the cleansing step. If you choose to use one consider a natural product such as witch hazel, which can help prevent acne and oily skin. For teenage skin, its important that you don’t dry out your skin too much with a harsh toner.  Removing too much oil from your skin only makes the body produce more!

Moisturiser

This step will keep your skin soft and hydrated.  Moisturisers also act as a barrier to stop our skin getting irritated by pollutants and other harmful elements.

Never too early to start looking after teenage skin

However, skincare isn’t the be all and end all…

It’s also important that you’re being mindful of what you’re putting into your body. Shunning junk food for healthier options such as fruit, veg and other whole foods, will reduce inflammation. This in turn helps to keep skin elastic, strong and pimple free.

Watch your salt intake as well, as too much can lead to puffiness and it can worsen acne. Caffeine also aggravates the skin and causes pimples too, so opt for decaf.

Don’t forget about water. As skin is an organ, water is essential for healthy cell function. A lack of water will cause your skin to dry out so make sure you’re drinking at least 2 litres (about 8 cups) daily to keep your skin looking great.

You should also limit sun exposure. Whilst getting out in the sunshine allows you to absorb some healthy Vitamin D, you can over do it.  Harmful UV rays can actually lead to skin cancer, so make sure to stay out of the sun between 11am-3pm (at it’s strongest) and wear SPF even on your face!

Routine is the key!

Cleaning your face will only help so much. To make sure your skin is looking the healthiest it can be take on board the following tips.

  • It’s important to incorporate your new skincare routine in the AM and PM. You might think that your face should be clean in the morning if you washed it the night before. This is untrue as sebum is produced over night; so it’s important to de-clog your pores and get rid of sweat build up.
  • Work on building healthy habits will ensure that your skin is protected and looking healthy all the time.

What does your skincare routine look like? What skincare tips can you offer to other young people?
